April 2011

So I just went through all the pictures I have on my computer and found pictures spanning from when I was a baby up until today.

I took one picture from each year of my life and stuck them all into one giant folder. I clicked the sideshow button and watched myself age. I also watched myself balloon and shrink and balloon again.

Not going to lie, it was kind of a harrowing experience.

It also showed me just how few pictures of myself I took when I was bigger. It’s like I didn’t exist. I clearly need to start taking more pictures now. I haven’t taken a full body picture in a while. Might be about time to remedy that.

Operation No-Refined Carbs, Day 23

I really hardcore wanted some chocolate today.

And then I found dark chocolate almond spread. No refined carbs.

It was glorious.

And can I just say: fuck Nutella (whose first ingredient is sugar).

The Alton Brown Challenge is officially ON!

I have made a tab on my page chalk full of AB Challenge goodness. What’s more - there’s a few folks who want in on it as well!

So far I have: missfitintx, skinnybound, and catherinegetsfit. If you’re not on this list and would like to be, let me know. If you’re on this list and don’t want to be - let me know that too.

I think a cool way to be able to chart all of our progress and keep accountable for the challenge is to have a spreadsheet (or some kind of document you can update) in GoogleDocs. Here’s a link to mine. I’ll also be doing a weekly status update post.

This isn’t any kind of official challenge. I’m not organized enough for that. It’s just something I thought would be fun. If some other folks want to join, then that’s cool too. If you do want to join, just shoot me a message telling me so and giving me a link to your GoogleDocs and I’ll link it up to the tab on my page.

I think this is going to be fun.

I love him, too! I’m thinking about trying something like this. Good luck!

catherinegetsfit replied to your post: I am creating my own challenge for the next month.

I love this. This is a great idea for a challenge, and I might borrow it!

missfitintx replied to your post: I am creating my own challenge for the next month.

This sounds awesome! I think I’ll join you and give this a try too!

Seriously, guys, let’s do this thing. I’m going to make a tab on my page with all the info if you’re interested. It’s not going to be an official challenge or anything - because I am way to unorganized for that level of seriousness - but it’d still be cool to have some other people join in if they wanted to.

I’ve started a spreadsheet on GoogleDocs to track my progress that I’ll link up once I figure out how to use it - you guys could do the same. Then we can compare notes. You know, or something…

shortmom replied to your post: I am creating my own challenge for the next month.

I’ll add to your challenge. I’d like to see you do a weekly recap. Maybe keep a weekly checklist — spreadsheet or something for accountability? If you’re 85% successful, I’ll buy you the Alton Brown salt cellar: tinyurl.com/4r5grpk

image

I am going to do so well this month, you don’t even know.

Also, that salt cellar was supposed to be the reward I bought myself for hitting my first goal weight - but I bought a fancy electric pepper grinder instead. Which I subsequently broke. BUT THAT SALT CELLAR WILL BE MINE!

For real, though: thank for for being so freaking supportive! You really don’t need to entice me with the prospect of fancy gifts, though. I would feel like the world’s biggest douche if I made people by me things. I promise to do weekly updates, though. And I created a spreadsheet on GoogleDocs on Monday. Now just have to find a way to make it public without attaching all the information on my Google account to it…

#AB Challenge
I am creating my own challenge for the next month.

I recently told you all about my love affair with Alton Brown. Since then, I’ve been doing some research on his weight loss and change in diet and lifestyle. Okay, so most of my research involved watching the episode of Good Eats where he talks about his weight loss. Whatever.

Anyway, the main point is: he developed some lists of foods, and that’s how he changed his diet. The lists look like this:

Eat Daily List - fruits, whole grains, leafy greens, nuts, carrots, green tea

Eat Three Times Per Week List - oily fish, yogurt, broccoli, sweet potatoes, avocado

Only Once Per Week List - pasta, one alcoholic drink, red meat, dessert

Zero Times Per Week List - fast food, soda, processed meals, canned soups, “diet” anything

So, I have decided that I am going to try, for the month of April, to follow the rules outlined in these lists. I already subscribe to the zero times per week and once per week lists. It’s the daily and three times a week lists that I’m going to have to work on.

If there’s one thing that giving up refined carbs for Lent has taught me, it’s that I do well when I have some kind of set of structured rules - even if they seem arbitrary. So I think I can do well with this.

And I know that this isn’t some kind of certified plan or anything, and maybe it seems silly to some of you… But AB did lose 50lbs. And it seems like it could be a fun challenge to take on. I think I’m up for a new challenge.

March Goals - REVISITED

1) Get back into the swing of blogging on here - I feel so out of touch with the community (this includes keeping up with food logs, replying to posts, sending out more messages, etc.) Done and DONE. Please, like I need to work to get back into blogging.

2) More fruits and veggies daily OWNED. I eat a ridiculous amount of fruits and veggies. More fruits than veggies, but I’m working on that.

3) Do some kind of strength training or circuit training three days a week. FAIL. My working out this month has been awful. I’m trying to get back into the swing of it, though.

4) Keep up with C25K DONE. While I might be a little behind in the weeks, I’m still sticking to it and plan to finish up these last two weeks in a totally EPIC fashion.

5) See 170 - maybe lower… Okay, that didn’t happen… but I did reach the halfway point in my weight-loss goals, so I’m really not upset about not seeing 170 this month

Overall - I’m happy with March. Watch out April… I have big plans for you…

I have been in SUCH a good mood lately.

Even with stress at work and a to do list the length of my leg (maybe that’s a bad example… my legs are stumpy).

I don’t know if it’s because my hormone levels are finally balanced (hello birth control pills and synthroid) - but I’m not questioning it.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over these past 13 months it’s this: a positive attitude is one of the key elements to losing weight.

I feel like Mr. Burns sitting here at my desk tapping my fingers together. Excellent. Everything is falling right into place. Bwahahahaha!

Guys. This weigh-in is a big one.

I am officially half-way through the weight-loss part of my journey. HOLY CRAP. My ultimate weight goal is 140, which means, at my highest weight, I had 65lbs to lose. Today I have officially reached the “half-way point.”

It took me fifteen months to get to where I am today. There were a LOT of bumps in the road and I have learned so much. I think now that I am a little wiser the second half of my journey won’t take me nearly as long as the first half.

I’m so excited to start making this happen.

I don’t know if I can do both because they are both in the middle of the week. But I will FOR SURE be doing the DC one (it’s only three hours away from me, as opposed to four).

Is it bad that I laughed when you called me a bad-ass? Seriously - FLATTERY WILL GET YOU EVERYWHERE.

I hope that you are doing well and that you are continuing to make progress. I WANT TO BE FOLLOWING YOU SO BADLY. I want to cheer you on. Goooooo Scooter!

I have had this EXACT same thing happen to me before. Shudders, sharp turns, steep drops. At one point everyone on my flight started screaming - myself included. I couldn’t help it.

I had never been afraid to fly before - and I had spent a good chunk of change flying back and forth between CA and VA for school, with a few international flights thrown in there as well. But ever since this happened, about three years ago now, I am always completely terrified to get on a plane.

I just had to tell you that I just learned what a burpee was tonight.. and I just did 3. The third one was laughable, to say the least. Way to go on the burpee front! PS I love Alton Brown, too. His chocolate chip cookie recipe is super good. Next time I make it I'll do burpees afterwards!

Aren’t burpee’s the WORST? Have you seen Abel’s challenge video where he did 300 of them? Clearly he is a champ. And so are you. I think anyone who takes on any amount of burpees should automatically receive bad-ass status.

It might sound like I’m completely full of shit - but I swear they get easier. Really, they do.

Who doesn’t love Alton Brown? I also love his chocolate chip cookie recipe. Also, his recipe for sugar cookies (with frosting, you know, for, like, Christmas cookies) is delicious. As long as you don’t roll it out too thin. Made that mistake before…

Oh my goodness. I had no idea it has already been 20 days - but you’re right, it has. That’s what happens when I get lazy and don’t post - I lose track of my days… Anyway - THANK YOU! It was so amazing to wake up to such a kind and supportive message. Thank you, thank you, thank you. It means a lot to me to have such a great support system here on tumblr. I love you guys.

And I never thought of it… but there are lots of instances of “40” in the history of the Abrahamic religions: Lent, Noah’s ark, Moses and the Jews traveling through the desert… I’m probably missing more. I think you’ve stumbled on to something here…

Mar 29, 2011
Have I told you all about my complete and total love affair with Alton Brown?

No? Well… then this is awkward…

Anyway, it’s true: I love him. He’s the reason I really got into cooking. He’s smart, he’s funny, he’s… amazing.

Anyway, the man has been on his own health and fitness journey of sorts and I finally managed to watch the episode of Good Eats where he talks about it. Seeing as he is completely brilliant (and that he’s lost 50lbs) I thought his wisdom would be something I would share with you all.

If you’re looking at this post on your dash - I know the videos look like tiny, grey squares. Click on one and it’ll let you watch it, though. Promise.

I've been finding it really easy to make excuses for not working out lately.

This week started out strong with two runs and a night of circuit training. Then I started to feel not quite 100%. I’ve been really tired and rundown feeling, and my heart has been fluttering in a weird way when I workout. So I have opted for not working out. I’m a bad, bad fitblr.

And tonight will be no different. The in-laws are coming over for dinner and I have to stop by the store to buy food and rush home to clean up the house - which is amazingly dirty considering I just scrubbed the place down on Wednesday (I guess that’s what I get for living with a dog, a cat, and a boyfriend). So no run.

I do plan on doing some circuit training. Let’s see how I’ll try to get out of it this time.
